A room with a view
Moving is a bittersweet transition . . . even when your window faces a brick wall.
As I gather the last of my portable attachments,
a romantic recollection of my most recent refuge [alliteration!!]
Inca bebe: an invitation
created for one friend [Edith] in collaboration with another [Erin]
Desire:
Mom is proud of her Inca ancestry, and inspired by belly henna.
She also likes the color teal.
Issue:
The blunt geometry of Inca design doesn’t exactly lend itself to the delicate henna aesthetic . . . leaving little in common besides their use of repetition and symbolic patterns.
Solution:
Integrating these concepts tested more than my illustration skills . . .
I liked the idea of a peacock [often found in henna design, a bird which the Inca likely knew nothing of]. It has since ancient times represented beauty and renewal [birds in general being messengers between Earth and a higher plane]. I stylized using Inca principles, with a Chakana [Inca tree of life] in the womb. The tail houses a poem chosen by the expecting mother.
Erin swooped in and saved the day with some lovely type and color treatments, softening up the harsh edges of the existing design – and bringing it all together.
